Freed Wisconsin zoo cougars captured

Two cougars freed from the Manitowoc, Wisc. Lincoln Park Zoo by vandals were captured Thursday without incident. Vandals reportedly cut chain-link fencing overnight to free the two animals. “They are raised for the purpose of education. People who think they are releasing these animals as a service to the animals are just wrong,” said Mayor Kevin Crawford. As reported by AP and the (Manitowoc) Herald Times Reporter.

Dog saves Canadian family from wolf attack

Wolves1Shadow, a Rottweiler-cross, is being credited with alerting a man to the presence of hungry wolves near his children while the family was tobogganing east of Fort Nelson, BC. "I looked back and saw my dog intercept the lead wolf -- there were two of them. They were heading towards the kids and the dog came in," said Kyle Keays, who tracked and killed the male and female wolves. Reported in The Province.

Traps set for mountain lion at S. California campus

The California Department of Fish and Game has placed numerous traps around the campus of Cal State San Marcos following repeating mountain lion sightings there. Students have been on winter break since Dec. 15. “The good news is that the campus is pretty clear of people,” said university spokesman George Cagala. In the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Outdoor, hunting writer charged with posting public property

Authorities in Duluth, Minn. report that outdoor writer, columnist and bowhunter Jeff Murray has been charged with trespassing for allegedly posting no-trespassing signs on public property. Murray, 57, told the Duluth Tribune that he expects to be cleared in the matter. "I thank God I live in America where everyone can have their day in court," Murray said. Earl Golding, whose coverage of the area’s hunting and fishing scene in the Waco Tribune-Herald earned him fans well beyond Central Texas over half a century, died Sunday in McGregor after a long illness.

Off-duty cop pulls gun in deer jerky seasoning dispute

It's the feel-good story of the holiday season. Well, not really. The owner of the Top Choice Meat Market in Vancouver, Wash., said the off-duty officer was upset because 4 pounds of his deer jerky was seasoned incorrectly. When butcher Mike Brannan gave the officer his meat and told him never to come back to the shop, that's when he pulled out a gun, according to Brannan. Fox 12 has the full report.

Roadside mower slices, dices 16-foot python
